The famous golden Wii, once intended for the British Queen, is up for auction. How much will this precious piece of video game history go for?
You’ve probably heard of the golden Wii that was supposed to be in Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II’s apartments. The 24k gold plated console is a 2009 PR stunt by THQ to promote the underperforming minigame collection Big Family Games. Intended as a gift for the lady of Buckingham Palace, the package never reached the Queen due to strict security regulations.
Now, 13 years later, if you have the spare change, you have the opportunity to call this almost royal device your own. Because the unique item is on the auction site Goldin offered for sale. The current price is 2,000 British pounds.
After the package was rejected at the palace gates, the collector’s item ended up back on the publisher’s shelves – for over a decade. Since then, the whereabouts of the device have been fairly well documented. In the meantime, the golden Wii was owned by a Dutch collector who specialized in developer hardware. Last year he tried to sell them for the ridiculous price of the equivalent of $300,000, but ebay removed the auction.
Now that special Wii has resurfaced and is looking for a new owner with a taste for luxury. Oh yes, the copy of Big Family Games is also included!
