I know that licensing is not the case sexy topic, but when it comes to specific properties – like war of stars and major sports – it plays a super important role which games we get to play and who makes them. That’s my way of explaining why I’m writing about them surprising announcement that EA makes its first Lord of the rings Game since 2006.
For all the shit people are talking about EA in 2022, most of it for good reason, The publisher had a run in the ’00s in which they released a number of excellent Lord of the rings gameslike the brawler movie connections, the cult Battle for Middle-earth Series of strategy games and Third Agea final fantasy clone, this is a much better than most people ever thought possible.
So there’s a strange sense of nostalgia associated with today’s announcement, with the rights to the series now under new managementEA makes a new one Lord of the rings Game. That’s the good news. The bad news is that this is a free mobile game. The good news – sorry, but this is a rollercoaster ride of an announcement – is that it’s based on one of the best types of free-to-play games out there.
Called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earthhere is the official description of the game:
The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth features engaging storytelling, turn-based combat, deep collection systems, and a wide cast of characters from across the vast universe of Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit. Players will progress through iconic stories from Tolkien’s world and take on the great evils of Middle-earth.
Basically, It will Star Wars: Galaxy of Heroes—it’s even being developed by the same team, Capital Games—I only swap Jedi for Rohirrim and Hobbits. Which, you know, isn’t such a cool announcement as EA saying, “Hey, we’re doing Battle for Middle-earth III“, but for all who stand on it GoHs occasional daily battles, that could be neat.
And maybe Battle for Middle-earth III may come next.
