streamers kjanekaron did a subathon for her 92,000 followers earlier today and decided to spend some of that time cooking. It was a bad idea.
As you can see in this video below, Kjanecaron had set up a camera in her kitchen to film herself cooking, and as this clip starts, smoke is already filling the kitchen, probably because she set the hob and the pan too high is overheating.
It doesn’t take long for the food – whatever it is/was – to catch fire, and then she makes one big Mistake.
I’ve seen people laugh about it, make fun of their cooking and call for help in tweets/replies, but this is no joke. I know I’ve been on this site for a long time, but my last job was at NSW Fire & Rescue (in recruitment, not as a firefighter) and especially kitchen fires were the main things we spent our time educating people about.
They are the leading cause of home fires, partly because they happen so often, but also because they can be catastrophic in situations like this. The initial fire here on the hob is a pretty small thing, we’ve all accidentally lit something at some point in our lives, but running some water on it – although it seems like the best option – makes this a life-threatening situation.
Pouring water on a grease fire is like pouring gasoline on it, only worse in some ways. Adding water to burning oil at this temperature causes the water to instantly sink to the bottom – since the oil and water don’t mix – where it is then superheated against the pan explodes get out. Check out what happens to this small pan fire when a cup of water is added in this more controlled example:
In the case of Kjanecaron, she was very fortunate. You can see how a small part of the food squirts out and continues to burn on the hob; if any of them had hit the cupboards, it could have quickly become a life-threatening situation. Instead, she ended up with just a small burn on her hand.
So yeah, while it’s very easy for people to laugh about it, if you get anything out of the video at all, it’s the knowledge – or reminder – that hey, never throw water on a burning oil/fat fire. Instead, turn off the hob (if possible) and use a fire extinguisher or fire blanket before calling the local fire department.
