Amazon Game Studio has released a new trailer for its multiplayer survival game The New World at The Game Awards. There seems to be some major changes that have taken place since we last saw the game.
The New World is a team-based survival-vs-player-vs-nature survival game that features exploration, resource exploitation, and expansion. I become part of an organization that creates a new culture, arriving on the coast of an unknown island. I work with team-partners to deliver resources, hands-on tools and build a foundation. Together, we want to destroy other foundations, and survive the invasion by those already on the island.
Back in February, Amazon showed the game to the media. We felt that, despite the fact that they looked good and played well, some of their themes were overly influential, with a particular focus on colonial rulers to exterminate the citizens of the "new" country. Today's trailer shows a very paper-based story that looks like a historical setting.
The resident now seems to be some kind of fictional hero, rather than a 17th-century military colony. Further clarification is given by the fact that the enemies already on the island are former residents from other times devastated by land forces. There are more variations in monsters than the standard zombies we saw earlier this year.
The New World is out in May on Windows PC. We'll have more on this game in the coming weeks.
