Part of this is intentional, as the game constantly “lies” about the true size of the map, and keeps expanding it every time you think you’re about to get to the edge.
But the Elden Ring also doesn’t tell you about the few areas hidden underground, or the many caves and mines scattered around its mountains. If you’re just trying to get to the end of the game in the most efficient way possible (that doesn’t involve running at speed), you’re going to be playing a different game than everyone has ever played.
As we all know by now, you only need two Great Runes to get to the final area of the game, and then you’ll be on your way to a specific hidden area to get the items you need to defeat the final boss.
To help you imagine how many game worlds you actually have Have To explore, Reddit user Spicy_Slice posted a photo of the Elden Ring map with only the critical path highlighted. It’s the very thin arched line that runs through the map, but it only puts things in perspective when you see how much of the full map is technically “optional”.
Notably, the Elden Ring offers multiple paths for its main area. For example, the route highlighted above ignores the task of having the two halves of the medallion operate the elevator that takes you to the Altus Plateau, and instead uses a trail.
While all players have to cross certain thresholds in the same way, most players actually have a different experience entering most of that world.
