There are many ways to organize our files on the Mac. We can use as many folders as we need, although the system already comes with some predefined. Files which, perhapsnewer in system, may not know or maybe not knowing where they are in our computer. Let’s briefly discuss the subject.
A predefined folder designed to maintain order
Due to the visibility of the Desktop folder, the one we see on the Mac above the Dock, many users only use this location to save their files. Apart from the fact that it considerably slows down the operation of the computer, the truth is that as the number of files increases, finding something is really hard.
Yes, we can use the Recent folder, the one that collects all our files in chronological order, but that might not be the best idea either. Our recommendation is use user folder, the one that bears our name. There we will find several subfolders such as Downloads, Documents, Desktop, Music, Videos and Pictures. In them we can order our content in a comfortable way, without cluttering the desktop and knowing where to find everything.
And where is this user folder? Easy. To access it, just press Command (⌘) + Shift (⇧) + H. We will see that it automatically appears in front of us. Alternatively, we can add it to the sidebar of the Finder, to keep it even more at hand. We do like this:
- We open the application Searcher.
- On the menu Searcher we play in preferences.
- We enter the tab Lateral bar.
- We activate the folder with our name.
As soon as we do, being able to close the settings window, we will see that the user folder, Home in English (hence the H in the shortcut), appears in the sidebar of the Finder for give us one-click access.
Let’s look at downloads and consider iCloud Drive
At this point, and since we’re on the subject, let’s take a moment to pay attention to the Downloads folder. A file that is sometimes easy to forget and which, with time and use, can end up accumulating a lot of files. It’s a good idea to periodically review what’s there, save what’s needed in your user folder, and delete the rest.
In the end, in terms of organization, each of us has our preferences and recommendations. Using our Mac’s user folder is one of them. Another thing to keep in mind is to enable and use iCloud Drive to synchronize all our data with the cloud. Thanks to this, we can access it from our iPhone or iPad and also from any device connected to the Internet.
An interesting resource that works as backup and backup of our files without using Time Machine or equivalent systems for this. It all starts with the correct ordering of our files in the user folder of our Mac, the rest is a matter of a few clicks.
