The final end of the Lightning connector could have a date, in 2023 all Apple devices, including the iPhone 15, will opt for USB-C.

After many years of delay, it seems that Apple is convinced to make the definitive leap to the USB Type-C connector in 2023. As the company’s most reputable analysts have revealed, next year The iPhone 15 will free up the USB-C connectionand the rest of the accessories such as AirPods or mice and keyboards will follow the same path.

A few days ago, the Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo reported that the iPhone 15 will, according to their sources, with USB-C. Shortly after, a second report from a reliable source like Bloomberg reported that Apple was internally testing the design of an iPhone with USB-C. And now Kuo is back with more relevant information about the USB-C connection.

The Lightning connection is carried over from the iPhone 5, but USB-C seems to be the logical evolution.

In 2023, all Apple devices will be charged with USB-C

The Apple’s strategy with the USB-C connection has been somewhat inconsistent. They were the first to offer this connection on MacBook, and for a long time it was the only connection available. Then they decided to do the same with the iPad Pro, extending USB-C to the iPad Air and iPad mini over the years. But the iPhone remained unchanged with its Lightning connection.

It seems that what Apple really wanted was to “skip” USB-C on the iPhone and go completely wireless., both when charging and transferring data. However, these plans seem to be taking longer than expected, so Apple would have decided to use this connection for a few years.

  1. Portless iPhone can cause more problems due to current limitations of wireless technologies and immature MagSafe ecosystem.
  2. Other Lightning port products (e.g. AirPods, Magic Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse, MagSafe Battery) will also be moving to USB-C for the foreseeable future.

If this information is true, it means the ultimate end of the Lightning connector. A revolutionary connector in its time, introduced with the iPhone 5 in 2011, as it is completely reversible and compatible with the latest data transfer technologies.

The connector turned out good and is still one of the best today, even better than USB-C by being more solid and resistant. However, that doesn’t seem like enough, and considering that Europe is going to force the switch to USB-C, Apple has decided to discontinue Lightning in the near future.
