Elden Ring’s map is quietly changing with each patch

Eldon Ring Several patches have been received since its release at the end of February. Developer FromSoftware has made several performance improvements to the game, fixed some bugs, and rebalanced a range of skills and weapons in an attempt to downplay the most obvious overpowered options.

Like many Japanese developers, FromSoft feels guilty about tweaks not mentioned in the patch notes.Let the player discover and record these on their own to try to track what Actually from one patch to another.

These changes are usually related, which is why players tend to look for them. But some people don’t notice it at all — unless you’re a sharp-eyed modder. YouTuber Illusory Wall, who has spent his career digging deep into FromSoftware’s game to discover clip content, clip boundaries, and track hidden changes, posted a video about a specific unlisted change you might not even want to check out.

That’s the beautiful world map in the game. In the video below, Illusory Wall – with the help of other community members – shows how the map for each of the major areas of Elden Ring has changed since the game’s launch. FromSoft has apparently been cleaning up the map to retrace areas and improve the accuracy of its representation of the game’s physical world.

This also extends to the illustrated map pickups players earn to dispel the Fog of War. Most of the changes are benign and appear to be aimed at getting rid of areas of the world that no longer exist, or adding locations not previously shown on the map.

The YouTuber speculates that some parts of the map are procedurally generated results, which is why the developer had to go back and update them with what was actually added later. However, some of the removed lands etc may indicate that FromSoft initially had a plan for them, but eventually removed them as time ran out.

This is common for developers, as many have found pruned content, as well as mechanics removed from most of the studio’s games. FromSoft likely updated the world itself in subsequent patches to its other games, but since Elden Ring was the first to include a world map in this way, the changes are effectively documented.
