One of the novelties that was announced to improve our Privacy and Security in Android 13 it was a new photo pickerbut in the first preview, Google already predicted that this novelty would also reach previous versions of Android in the future, but what we didn’t expect was that it would come so soon.
We won’t have to wait for the release of Android 13 to take advantage of the new photo picker on our devices, and it is that Google has announced that in the May update of Google Play Services this Android 13 feature will also be reached Android 11 or above over the next few days.
Here is the new photo picker
Google launched in the preview of Android 13 a new photo picker for protect the privacy of our photos and videosthus avoiding that we have to authorize an application to access all our photos and videos.
When an app wants to access a photo or video, it will no longer have to allow permission. Android’s new photo picker acts as a middleman for the application can only access the photo or video that we have selected previously.
A new photo picker wants to become a new standard way for apps to access our photos and videos. The picker will display all photos and videos from our secure internal and cloud storage services, as well as our albums. By selecting the photos and/or videos, we are giving this application the permission to access only those files and not all the images and videos on our device, as was the case with the “Files and multimedia content”.
This new photo picker is mainly designed for applications where the user needs to add an image or video in a very specific way, for example, adding a profile photo. Thus, the application will not need to ask for any permission, since the new photo picker is responsible for protecting our privacy.
Now that the Google Play Services are rolling out support for the new photo picker, it’s now up to developers to make their apps compatible with Google’s new tool.
