Beyond its mission of protecting the device against possible falls, the mobile cover can have different uses. Some time ago, for example, Apple patented a box to increase the performance of the iPhone and OPPO showed another box with ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to control home automation in real time.
The last proposal in this direction come to us for huawei and, as Motorola did years ago, it consists of a shell capable of providing the Chinese manufacturer’s flagship, the Huawei P50 Pro, with 5G connectivity. With this new accessory, leaked a few months ago, Huawei manages to avoid the US veto that currently prevents it from launching phones compatible with the latest generation networks on the market.

The United States’ veto against Huawei not only prevents it from integrating Google services and applications into its mobiles, but also severely limits access to components key for making terminals. In fact, the company can include Qualcomm processors in its phones, but without 5G, so even its high-end models come with a Snapdragon 888 4G, or what amounts to the same thing, a Snapdragon 888 with 5G disabled.
This is the reason why a few months ago it was leaked from Weibo that Huawei was preparing a case that would add 5G to these phones that don’t come as standard, like the latest Huawei P50. Well, the rumors have come true and the deal is now official: it’s called “5G Communication Shell” and it supports dual-mode 5G.
This accessory, developed and produced by Soyealink, integrates an eSIM chip and a 5G modem in the case to upgrade the 4G network to 5G by connecting to the Huawei phone via its USB-C port. It weighs around 52g, is around 3.2mm thick and is made of light gray leather. Its technical specifications are as follows:

The solution is already supported by the three major Chinese carriers and, according to IT Home (in Chinese), it will go on sale in June for 799 yuan, which is equivalent to around 113 dollars at the current exchange rate. At the moment it is only compatible with the Huawei P50 Pro, but there are plans to adapt it to more manufacturers and more models in the future. It is not known whether it will reach other countries.
