Pokémon GO TCG expansion adds Bonker’s new transforming Ditto

The upcoming Pokemon GO extension for the Trading Card Game features Melmetal VMAX, the original Legendary Birds and a wild new Ditto transformation unlike anything the TCG has ever seen before. I’m sure it will be extremely rare to find and also incredibly satisfying for those who do.

There have been plenty of Ditto cards before, but this one is coming on July 1st when the Pokemon GO Expansion drop is special because it uses stickers to disguise itself as other Pokémon. In an Instagram post, the Pokémon Company used a Chill-Surfing Bidoof as an example. Usually just a cute and cuddly HM boss, Bidoof, who have a sneaky little Ditto icon in the bottom left corner, are actually the tacky little imposters in disguise. Peel off a sticker and a rare holographic Ditto will reveal underneath.

This is what the transformation looks like in action:

“Note that the Pokemon resting on Ditto cannot be used competitively in official games—only the Ditto itself.” the Pokémon company wrote in an announcement. “In fact, you’ll find a small Ditto icon instead of the typical tournament registration mark!”

It’s unclear what other Pokémon the new expansion’s Ditto can disguise as. Maybe a holographic Moltres? Would anyone be that cruel?

Pokemon cards saw one big boom in recent yearswith extremely rare card pickup huge bucketfuls of cash. At the beginning of the pandemic, people rushed to Target and other major department stores to snag new packs. While that part of the frenzy has subsided, unboxing, raffles, and other giveaways are still big on YouTube and Twitch. And given the sustained popularity of Pokemon GOthe crossover is probably one of the larger expansions that the TCG has seen in recent years.

but igamesnews mention, thatsome collectors already are working your way into an existential crisis about the correct preservation of the new Dittos. Shall they remain pure and unpeeled? Or should the stickers be removed and packaged separately so the adhesive on them doesn’t damage and ruin the card underneath over time? It’s probably best to collect at least two Dittos and do both just to be extra safe.
