Striking Distance Studios is currently working on The Callisto Protocol and is also known to belong to PUBG creators Krafton. Accordingly, in the past there was always talk of a connection between the new title and PUBG: Battlegrounds, but this has now been said goodbye.
In the past, the horror game The Callisto Protocol had always been explicitly emphasized that it was set in the same universe as PUBG: Battlegrounds. Accordingly, the title should play 300 years in the future compared to the Battle Royale long-running hit – and thus also show part of the future of PUBG itself. However, as Glen Schofield emphasizes, they are now deviating from this plan.
A statement from Schofield now confirms that the previously planned connection between the two games has been completely cut; The Callisto Protocol effectively becomes a standalone game with “its own world, story and universe”. Contrary to previous plans, there will no longer be cross-connections with the PUBG franchise.
The Callisto Protocol has obviously grown to the extent that the planned connection with PUBG could no longer be represented. Nevertheless, according to Schofield, there should “continue to be some minor surprises for the fans” in the title, by which he probably means one or the other PUBG Easter egg.
Further background to the decisions made were not known, but fan feedback that questioned the connection between the two games could also have played a role.
The Callisto Protocol is scheduled to be released in 2022 for PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.
