A quick question to get you started: what do you think of when you hear the title Blood of Elves? Maybe the first Witcher novel by Andrzej Sapkowski that was published after the Witcher short stories. And soon maybe also on Blind Guardian.

The Europe metal band released theirs these days new song Blood of the Elves, whose name was not chosen accidentally. The band members were inspired by The Witcher and you can hear that:

A text about Geralt and Ciri

What sounds like a classic Blind Guardian song at first glance turns out to be true im Text as quite a deep understanding of the Witcher story. Although they avoid naming exact names, you quickly understand that this song is about Geralt and Ciri.

This is how Geralt’s alias becomes White Wolf mentioned or the text speaks of a predestined child – that same Ciri. This is made clear by the fact that the song also speaks of a graceful lioness. Here the band presumably refers to Calanthe, the grandmother of Ciri, who was also known as Citra’s lioness.

And if that’s not clear enough, the lyrics go on to say that there is a source inside her existed, which was difficult to bind. A clear reference to Ciri’s magical powers, which are notoriously difficult to control.

Geralt doesn’t miss out either. The witcher’s attitude, regardless of any dualistic thinking, to do a job as long as it gets paid is illustrated with the words Black or white, just pay me pretty clear.

More references: There are certainly more hints of the Witcher series hidden in the text for Blood of the Elves, but their classification would go beyond the scope here. The connection to fantasy in Blind Guardian isn’t entirely new – and the band is also known to be quite open to video games.

Blind Guardian and the video games

It’s been 15 years since Blind Guardian should have caught the eye of many non-Metal fans. As part of a side quest was in Sacred 2: Fallen Angel an in-game concert by the band unlock.

Years later, the band participated again in a Europe role-playing game: the band played the song for Die Zwerge Children of the Smith and is even part of a small mission. Additionally, the band released a matching music video in collaboration with developer King Art Games:

Blind Guardian’s proximity to video games isn’t too much of a surprise. The band members already stated in earlier interviews that they sometimes play games like World of Warcraft or Diablo themselves. And the obvious fantasy reference is also well known given the band’s discography.
