Sony has announced game console 5 20 million units have been sold worldwide.
That figure has been shared with GI.biz, and Sony said it plans to ramp up production so more people can get access to the console.
“We are delighted to share that Sony Interactive Entertainment has sold more than 20 million PlayStation 5 consoles worldwide,” said Veronica Rogers, Senior Vice President, Head of Global Sales and Business Operations at GI.biz.
“For those fans who haven’t gotten their hands on a console yet, please know that we plan to significantly ramp up PS5 production this year, and we’re constantly working to make sure the PlayStation 5 is available to everyone who wants it.”
That 20 million-unit figure has risen since May 2022, when Sony reported 19.3 million PS5 units sold.
The company said PlayStation 5 sales fell short of company expectations in fiscal 2021, which ended March 31, 2022. It expected the console to sell 14.8 million PS5s this year, but only 11.5 million were sold. The company missed its target by 3.3 million, attributing the lower figure to a global shortage of chips that hampered production.
Next year, Sony expects PS5 sales to match PS4 numbers and surpass the previous generation the following year.
Sony has previously said that PS5 engagement is the highest ever compared to PS4 during the same period in March.
