iOS 16: Switch controller support coming

As part of the WWDC, Apple presented the new iPhone operating system iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 for the iPads – and they bring an interesting feature for gamers.

Although the feature was not the subject of the larger keynote at WWDC, Apple launched the beta test via the Apple Developer Program after the presentation of iOS 16 and iPadOS 16 – and there they made a surprising discovery: both the Joy-Cons and the Both the Switch and the Pro Controller will be natively supported by Apple devices in the future.

This is good news, especially for users of the Delta emulator, which allows you to play GameBoy and Nintendo games on iOS devices. After the release of the new operating system, you could even do this with Nintendo’s own controllers, which you can then connect to your iPhone or iPad.

The discovery was made by iOS developer Riley Testut via Twitter disclosed; there were even impressions of how Super Smash Bros. is played via Delta emulator and connected controller on an Apple device.

A little later, Apple’s Engineering Manager Nat Brown also commented on the subject and confirmed the Joy-Con support. With the release of iOS 16, the controllers of the Nintendo Switch will then officially be supported, as will those of the Xbox Series X/S and the PlayStation 5. The following hardware generations are the prerequisite for installing iOS or iPadOS 16 in the fall:

• iPad Pro 11 (First, second and third generation)
• iPad Pro 12.9 (First, second, third, fourth, and fifth generation)

• iPad Mini (Fifth and sixth generation)
