Continuity Camera is an exciting feature for macOS Ventura that was revealed at WWDC22. Apple itself explains the details of how it works.
After two days of processing a ton of WWDC22 information, we have some new details that are of interest to all users. One of the features that surprised many is the new Continuity Camera feature for macOS Ventura. To learn more, Apple took the time to explain to us thanks to Karen Xing, a software developer.
Use your iPhone as a Mac webcam with Continuity Camera
Why did Apple think of a feature to include iPhone cameras? Is the built-in camera on Mac not enough? Good, the reality is that Apple wants to improve the experience taking advantage of the characteristics of iPhone lenses.
macOS Ventura will be able to detect your device’s camera and microphone. Almost all applications will be integrated automatically. In theory, the developers won’t have to do anything at all to make everything work. Do you remember the different camera options in macOS Monterey? They’re also achieved with the Continuity Camera, specifically Portrait Mode, Center Stage Effect (where the camera follows you if you move), and Studio Light. By changing the orientation of the iPhone from landscape to portrait or vice versa, everything will still work.
On another side, Apple will have an auto-select API that other apps can use. This means that macOS Ventura will be able to switch cameras if it detects the iPhone in a holder and/or connected via USB or Bluetooth with WiFi.
A unique experience in the Apple environment
In case you don’t know, there are apps that turn your device into a webcam, although they don’t offer a lot of possibilities in terms of functionality. Apple’s Continuity Camera will provide full integrity so much so that the Mac will be able to take photos and videos through the applications. It will take full advantage of the iPhone, depending on the model you have, the maximum you can capture is 1920 x 1440 video at 60 fps.
Another cool feature is the desktop view. Thanks to the iPhone’s super ultra-wide lens items may be displayed that can be seen on the surface you are standing on. An API will also be available that can enable more actions.
One last and most important note, all of this will be available from iOS 16 and macOS 13. Many iPhones will be completely left out due to lack of compatibility.
