We didn’t see it coming, but Lollipop Chainsaw, an atypical production by Suda51, wants to re-invest in the market with a new project. A truly new game or a repeat of the first installment?
Lollipop Chainsaw 2 or Remastered?
Many old games that had some critical and/or commercial success are looking to make a comeback to hope for better performance and restart the license to install them in today’s video game landscape. As discovered by VGCYoshimi Yasuda, ex-CEO of Kadokawa Games, announced an upcoming return of the game. “Lollipop Chainsaw is back at Dragami Games” he says on Twitter.
Dragami Games is Yoshimi Yasuda’s new studio. Its relation to the license? He was a producer on the title, software published by Kadokawa Games, his former box. That would close the circle. An amazing but vague announcement.
Is Yasuda-san talking about Lollipop Chainsaw 2? From a remaster? From a reissue? Either way, there’s certainly an audience. The game has sold over 1 million copies, making it one of Grasshopper Manufacture’s biggest hits. It was even adapted into an adult film.
A game by James Gunn that inspired The Suicide Squad
James Gunn, director of The Suicide Squad, Guardians of the Galaxy or Horribilis, contributed to the development of Lollipop Chainsaw under the direction of Goichi Suda. The filmmaker helped create the story but also the characters, with other people helping him with his films. It connects and James Gunn took to Twitter to wish the game, the only one he’s worked on, a happy tenth birthday.
A significant experience that served him for the character of Harley Quinn in The Suicide Squad (2021). Especially the high-slung scenes where the Joker’s girlfriend indulges in violent sequences with a touch of fantasy. This is the case, for example, when she shoots bad guys.
I made a video game called Lollipop Chainsaw. In this game I made with Suda in Japan, I always liked how hearts and cute little things are made out of people mixed with blood. The awful blood aesthetic mixed with the way Harley sees life, with stars in her eyes, helped me create the Harley vision.
James Gunn about colliders.
