Sony is known to be stepping up its efforts to bring major gaming brands to the big screen. One of them is Gran Turismo – and in this regard there is now news regarding the launch date.
The renowned entertainment magazine Deadline now reports that Sony has missed a release date for its planned film adaptation of Gran Turismo. As early as next year, the strip should therefore come to the big screen, namely on August 11, 2023.
The report goes on to say that the film was based on a real story in which a teenager who loves to play Gran Turismo succeeds. Win a series of Nissan competitions to eventually become a professional racer.
In order to pack this story properly, the services of a renowned director have also been secured: Neill Blomkamp (“District 9”, “Chappie”, “Elysium”) will take on this important post. The screenplay is written by Jason Hallo (“American Sniper”). Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan from PlayStation Productions are involved as producers alongside Doug Belgrade and Dana Brunetti.
It’s Sony’s second attempt at making a Gran Turismo film. A first attempt was made in 2013, when, in addition to Dana Brunetti, Michael de Luca (“The Social Network”, “Fifty Shades of Grey”) should also be involved as a producer. In 2015 there was speculation that Joseph Kosinski (“Tron: Legacy”) could take over the post of director, but that is no longer the case with the current implementation.
If you revisit the storyline from 2013, the film focuses on Lucas Ordonez, a Gran Turismo player who won GT Academy in 2009 and became a real racing driver. Later in 2011, Jann Mardenborough, the third GT Academy winner, did the same.
