We’ve been hearing rumors for a while evolution of the screen technology of our computers and iPads. A few changes that are materializing little by little and which partly involve the arrival of OLED screens on the new MacBook Air and iPad Pro.
The need to ditch LCD screens
Evolve beyond the frame LED screens have long since transitioned to OLED. Because? To offer many advantages of micro-LED, but with several disadvantages such as image persistence, among others. The evolution of classic LCD screens at Apple begins to mark the branches.
On the one hand, we have the most professional devices, such as the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro, which have mini-LED screens. Meanwhile, rumors indicate that the MacBook Air and iPad Pro could have OLED screens. in a tweetRenowned display analyst Ross Young says it’s “increasingly possible” we’ll see a 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024, though the Air name could change.
Young also expects Apple to launch new iPad Pro 11 and 12.9 inches with OLED screens. A launch that, again, would be reserved for 2024. The iPad and MacBook Air would both have a two-layer structured display, both with green, red and blue emitters, which improves the amount of brightness and reduces energy consumption.
All screens will also be LTPO, which allows a variable refresh rate between 1 and 120 Hz, what we call ProMotion in the Apple environment. It will be new for the MacBook Air, while it will be an improvement for the iPad, which has ProMotion since 2017, but with a minimum refresh rate of 24Hz.
Overall, it seems clear that Apple is focused on moves traditional LCD screens to other technologies. For the moment we have seen the arrival of mini-LED screens, later we will see, still according to rumours, the arrival of OLEDs. There are still a few years left and the last stop has to be micro-LED, but changes are coming.
