Is Obi-Wan Kenobi getting a season 2?

Season 2 not (yet) officially announced: No, Disney has not announced a second season for Obi-Wan Kenobi at this time. This means that the previous six episodes by showrunner and director Deborah Chow stand alone. However, it would definitely not surprise us if Lucasfilm announces plans for more sequels any time soon.

Kenobi actually designed as a limited series: Yes, strictly speaking, Kenobi was previously designed as a limited series. This means that the story will be completed in a single season and no sequel is planned. In the meantime, Lucasfilm and those responsible behind Kenobi have rowed back. It is therefore not at all unlikely that the series about Obi-Wan will be continued.

Why a Season 2 wouldn’t surprise

Disney keeps all doors open: A few weeks ago, Lucasfilm boss Kathleen Kennedy revealed that there were already talks about a second season for Obi-Wan Kenobi. According to Kennedy, the main reason the production appears to have gone very smoothly and for everyone involved is one reason great time was. However, from a story point of view, there should be a good reason to continue Kenobi.

The latter is also underlined by the director and showrunner Deborah Chow, who is not quite as confident about further seasons for Obi-Wan Kenobi. In June 2022, however, Kathleen Kennedy emphasized in an interview with Entertainment Tonight again that a second season would definitely be possible if enough fans were in favor of it. Officially, new episodes for Obi-Wan on Disney Plus are not ruled out.

Ewan McGregor and Hayden Christensen are on board: Potential plans for a second season should always play into the cards that both the actor of Obi-Wan Kenobi and that of Anakin Skywalker or Darth Vader would definitely be available for new episodes of the Star Wars series. McGregor and Christensen emphasize in conversation with GQ both that they’d like to get more out of their return to Star Wars after 17 years and they’re not done with their characters – if it’s up to them.

Does a season 2 even make sense?

Slight spoiler alert!
Be warned of spoilers from this point on: While we won’t explicitly go into the story or specific details, we will still address where Kenobi has arrived after the six episodes that have been released so far.

The plot is actually complete: As a limited series, Obi-Wan Kenobi’s story is already at a pretty fitting point after the first season. Both the main and supporting characters have arrived where their story is being revisited in Episode 4 – A New Hope. Of course there are a few loose threads that give a little room for interpretation, but that’s pretty much it.

However, there are still stories to be told: Regardless, that doesn’t preclude Obi-Wan Kenobi from having more adventures. Many years pass between Episode 3 – Revenge of the Sith and Episode 4 – A New Hope Ben watching over a young Luke Skywalker on Tatooine.

The official Star Wars comics from Marvel already showed how much can be gained from this period and setting: in them, for example, Kenobi secretly defended exploited wet farmers from Jabba the Hutt or gave the bounty hunter Black Krrsantan from The Book of Boba Fett his scar. The potential for further stories and the will of everyone involved would therefore always be there and in view of this it would be quite surprising if Disney didn’t bring Obi-Wan Kenobi a second season.

And even if Kenobi doesn’t get a second season: In any case, we think it’s likely that we haven’t seen the last of Hayden Christensen in the role of Darth Vader. Theoretically, there would be enough planned projects – like Andor or Lando for example – that would take place in the time of the Galactic Empire and leave room for Vader to make an appearance.
