First reported by Eurogamer, a group of Silent Hill fans have decided to remake the entire game in Unreal Engine 5. So far, the team appears to be off to a very promising start.

This is the original trailer for 1998’s Silent Hill, released in 1999.

The details of the Silent Hill 2 remake were leaked not long ago, and rumors around the title became rampant. However, when non-E3 came out, many Silent Hill fans were disappointed to see the game not mentioned, including myself. Rumors could just be rumours, or this could be something we’ll see in the distant future, only time will tell.

Meanwhile, a group of fans known as Codeless Games are currently trying to recreate the original 1999 Silent Hill game in Unreal Engine 5. Recently, the team showed us what they’ve been working on and asked for feedback from fans and enthusiasts of Silent Hill.

In the ten-minute-long game video, James hangs out at Midwich Elementary School. This area is one of the team’s favorite places in the title game, and that’s probably true for many Silent Hill fans as well. The game itself looks great, and seeing the environment in such high resolution definitely evokes some nostalgia in me.

A full ten minutes of Silent Hill was remastered in Unreal Engine 5. Give me more, but less light!

The general consensus among video reviewers is that the gameplay looks great, but things are way too bright for Silent Hill. Horror movies are known for their misty worlds and dark corridors, and the atmosphere is probably Silent Hill’s most important and famous feature.

In this Unreal Engine 5 remake, the atmosphere has yet to be determined, an element that many fear the remake will struggle to get right, but the team behind Codeless Games will likely get it right. They’re clearly committed to the cause and I can’t wait to see the full thing.

What are your thoughts on the gameplay so far? This isn’t just horror game news either. Hideo Kojima may be launching a new horror game, rumors are swirling, and a new level of fear has been revealed.
