Something Wicked Games, a new studio founded by former Bethesda Game Studios and Obsidian Entertainment veterans, has announced its first game, Wyrdsong.
During gamescom’s opening night livestream, the role-playing game features a dark historical fantasy setting where every decision has consequences—both in this world and others as yet undiscovered.
Developed using Unreal Engine 5, the game takes place in a fictional medieval version of Portugal. Here, players will be challenged to question their reality and the choices they make.
The Washington, D.C.-based studio was founded by Bethesda veteran Jeff Gardiner and co-founded by former Obsidian design director Charles Staples. Both have been with their respective companies for 15 years, with Gardiner serving as lead producer and project leader on various titles in the Fallout and Elder Scrolls franchises. Staples was the design director for The Outer Worlds and head of the level design team for Fallout: New Vegas.
“Our goal with Something Wicked Games is to use our independence and creative autonomy to create the next evolution of open-world RPGs,” Gard iner said. “Our first project, Wyrdsong, has always been my dream game, and I’m so excited to finally be able to share it today.”
Something Wicked Games is hiring for all positions following a $13.2 million seed funding round from NetEase. The studio currently has 12 developers and hopes to achieve a full lineup of between 65-70 as development continues.
Since Wyrdsong is currently in pre-beta, a release date and platform will be announced.
