Sony’s full statement follows:
The global economic environment is a challenge that no doubt many of you around the world are facing. We see high global inflation rates as well as unfavorable currency trends impacting consumers and putting pressure on many industries. Due to these difficult economic conditions, SIE has made the difficult decision to increase the PlayStation 5’s suggested retail price (MSRP) in select markets in Europe, the Middle East and Africa (EMEA), Asia Pacific (APAC), Latin America (LATAM) as well as Canada. There will be no price increase in the US.
While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business, our top priority remains improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience all that PS5 offers and that is to come.
Thank you for your continued support.
The PlayStation 5 was launched nearly two years ago, and by now you’d expect the consoles to see price cuts, not increases (the PS4, for example, got its first cut in 2015, two years after release). In fact, this is the first time I can ever Remember, that’s how the price of a console increases across the board. Then again, I don’t recall a console ever being launched in the middle of a pandemic, neither does the worldwide shortage of chips and the inflation crisis.
