Netflix announced on Thursday that Francis Lawrence, known for his work on the Hunger Games series and 2005 I am Legendwill direct a 2007 adaptation BioShock. logan and Bladerunner 2049 Screenwriter Michael Green is also in the process of writing the film’s screenplay.

BioShock hardly needs an introduction. Developed in 2007 by Irrational Games (briefly known as 2K Boston) and 2K Australia, the first-person sci-fi horror shooter put players in the role of Jack, a man who destroys the city of Rapture, a dystopian art deco Metropolis discovered the seabed inspired by the objectivist writings of Ayn Rand after surviving a catastrophic plane crash over the Atlantic. There, Jack must contend with the genetically altered residents of the dying city as he searches for a way home.

The game was a critical and commercial hit and inspired two sequels in the form of 2010 BioShock 2 and 2013 BioShock Infinite, and serves as one of the most iconic games of its generation.

Plans for a BioShock live-action film date back to 2008 when the game’s publisher, Take-Two Interactive, announced that Universal Studios would be producing a film based on the game, directed by Gore Verbinski starring based on a screenplay by John Logan.

This movie was confirmed as cancelled in 2017 by Ken Levine, the game’s director, who cited the disappointing 2009 commercial turnout Guardian and Verbinski’s insistence on an “R” rating and then Verbinski’s departure as factors in both him and the studio’s decision to leave the project.
