Want to know the name of the following macOS code? Want to know how Apple's original operating system was called? Want to know more about Apple's history by finding code names for all versions of Mac OS X & MacOS?
If you answered yes to any of the above (or all) questions, you are in the right place, because below we give you a list of names of different types of Mac operating system, in addition to the Apple code names referred to in each of them.
When we turn our attention to the first MacOS and Mac OS X applications, we see that the pattern was followed from the beginning. With the exception of the first OS X beta, all kinds of Mac apps, from 2001 to 2012, had big cats names, such as cheetah (Cheetah) or panther (Panther).
Although cat names are used publicly, wine names are used within the company (with the exception of OS X 10.6 and MacOS 10.13, two programs that didn't have a code name).
Even after Apple changed the code names to California sites in 2013, the wine names were still used internally until 2014. In 2015, Apple also changed the code names in this case to apples-type names.
A year later, in 2016, the apple company decided to integrate the app genre from Mac OS X to macOS, thus merging with applications from other Apple products such as iOS, tvOS or watOS.
Below we give you a complete list of community code names for OS X versions, as well as code names used internally (if any).
