We may be hours away from the biggest news of the week. According to a new report, Amazon Acquisitions to be announced soon EA later this Friday.
The report did not specify the value of the deal, other than to say that Amazon has officially made an offer.
The news comes from a report by USA TODAY, citing sources familiar with the matter. That’s pretty much the range of information available today, but it’s actually not surprising given the recent news.
EA has reportedly been looking to acquire from a larger company for some time. Disney, Apple, Comcast and Amazon have all been cited as potential buyers, and it looks like Amazon’s bid has won.
Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard makes EA and Ubisoft the last two major independent Western publishers in the business. If the reports are true, Ubisoft would be the only major Western publisher to remain independent.
EA’s business relies heavily on microtransactions from FIFA, Madden and its popular sports games on consoles. Apex Legends, the publisher’s largest non-sports game, is a free-to-play shooter that continues to be popular and continues to generate revenue for EA.
The company’s other major franchises, such as Battlefield and Need for Speed, have struggled for years.
