Each trailer for Callisto Protocol has showcased some bloody ways to die, and players will need to see these and many more to earn an in-game achievement.
The Callisto Protocol is easily one of the most anticipated games of the fall, as the horror game has managed to dominate the many shows it’s appeared on, stay relevant in day-to-day conversations, and utilize Glen’s Dead space pedigree. Schofield. without simply feeling like another version of the same thing. Callisto Protocol is shaping up to be a great horror game, and death has become its calling card.
The Callisto Protocol is clearly not afraid to brutalize its protagonist in bloody, harrowing, and terrifying ways. And this is something that developer Mark James recently discussed in an interview with IGN Japan, stating that “[las muertes sangrientas] have become our signature now. We get a signature death at the end of every trailer.” It also appears that the studio wants to reward players who die, as James also hints that they will do so a lot.
James also stated that The Callisto Protocol deaths should not be seen as punishment, but as a way for someone to learn from their mistakes and be entertained in the process. Due to this philosophy, James revealed that The Callisto Protocol studio is currently working on achievements and trophies for the game, and the studio has put “an achievement in there for seeing all kills.” Apparently, this would involve the death of the game’s enemies, the game’s dangerous environments, and any other way the studio sees fit to kill their players.
Of course, James didn’t talk about how many unique ways there are to die in the game, but added that “you’re going to have to work hard to do it.” In other words, it sounds like a time sink given Callisto Protocol’s signature approach to death. That presents fans of the game and of course achievement hunters with a new challenge throughout the game. It might be something that unlocks naturally throughout the game if someone dies long enough, but since the goal in a game is usually not to die, it stands to reason that most players would miss out on some of these death animations.
Ultimately, it remains to be seen how this achievement really emphasizes The Callisto Protocol’s signature touch here, but it’s clear that fans are in for a bloody game nonetheless. Comparisons to Dead Space are already being drawn in this regard – such is the nature of games like these two – but it’s clear that it’s also making its own mark, at least from marketing so far.
The Callisto Protocol launches on December 2 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
