Battlefield 2042 will always remain a prime example of how a game shouldn’t appear. And DICE took the hit – slumped player numbers, countless angry and/or disappointed fans. But the development team is persistently working on getting the multiplayer shooter on course so that the remaining community can find peace.
After the first season was over half a year in coming, season 2 starts exactly twelve weeks after zero hour on August 30, 2022 and brings a lot of free new content to the game: three fresh weapons, two new vehicles, a stun grenade, a huge one new card. In the course of the season, other old cards are to be revised, and in Season 3 the class system will come back:

And at least in terms of player numbers, the work for DICE is paying off. The Steam player numbers for Season 2 are already – on the afternoon of the release day – the highest value since December 2021. With 17,000 simultaneously active players you shouldn’t have any problems with matchmaking, especially since the origin and cross-platform numbers are of course on top of that.
Two important notes on this:
- Of course, it has to be shown what consistency these new player numbers have. Normally, a large proportion of people lose interest after a short try, so it’s possible that Battlefield 2042 will level off at a meager 5,000 to 6,000 users after the first week.
- But: Battlefield 2042 is still showing an upward trend. Season 1 had a noticeably smaller peak of just 14,000 people active at the same time. That the second season can top that, even though the
Oh wow, first sign of life since release
yes no longer applies is anything but self-evident.
So it remains exciting whether Battlefield 2042 can stabilize a higher basic level in the long term or drop below the level of Battlefield 5 after the start of the season. We will keep you up to date.
