Signalis, a not-so-basic survival horror

Horror, notsobasic, Signalis, survival

Another title published by Humble Games that will end up in the Game Pass that we got to try during Gamescom 2022. signaled is announced for this year end. This is a game that mixes horror and survival. In fact, you’ll have to manage your meager resources and desperately search for solutions to the puzzles. Suffice it to say that they are not easy at all.

Signalis, a classic survival horror?

Wake up from your long sleep and explore a surreal retro tech world as Magpie, a replica tech in search of her forgotten dreams. Uncover terrifying mysteries, intriguing mysteries, and nightmarish creatures in this melancholy and tense experience of cosmic dread steeped in psychological survival horror.

As I’m sure you understood, the story takes place in a dystopian future. For your part, you embody Eister, who is nothing more than a replica. Unfortunately, she wakes up in a shipwreck on an icy planet. Your mission, if you accept it, will be to get out of here.

However, you will face some monsters and don’t have much to protect yourself with. During the demo I had a gun with about ten rounds. So much to tell you that it wasn’t enough and that I preferred dodging the monsters to facing them. However, the atmosphere of survival is brilliantly transcribed. In fact, the atmosphere, the sound design puts you in a state of constant tension.

More comfortable with the mouse than with the joystick?

The gameplay is rather simple, we run around, we search everywhere and above all we avoid or face enemies. As in the first resident Evil You must be stationary to aim and shoot. To know if you have your enemy in sight, a red cursor will be visible on him.

As I wandered through the demo, I was able to find a variety of objects to analyze and puzzles to solve. Original thing, when moving, the heroine plays like Solid Snake, but the first-person perspective takes over to solve or analyze the objects. This is where the keyboard-mouse combo gets interesting.

In fact, during the demo, I found it difficult to solve the puzzles using the joystick. The joystick was too slow so I picked up the keyboard and mouse and it was much more comfortable and faster. I don’t know if the puzzles will ever be timed or if time will stop in the FPS view, but sure, when monsters appear or you need to react, things can get complicated on the controller.

Conclusion: why not?

Half fig, half grape… The atmosphere of the game is excellent, but controlling it with the joystick seems difficult. Additionally, the pixelated side of the software makes the horror less tangible. Shooting at enemies seems ineffective, and I still felt a little frustrated. signaled is wonderful to look at. So let’s wait until October 27th when it lands on Xbox and PC Game Pass to form a clearer opinion with the final version.
