The company would consider integrating OLED technology combining flexible and rigid materials in its tablets.
A few years ago, Apple finally implemented OLED technology – far superior to LCD technology – in the screens of its latest generation iPhones. It has also been available for many years on your Apple Watch products. But at present, the expansion of technology OLED it had yet to catch up with their iPad devices.
That could change very soon. According to the latest information (via Macrumors) the firm with the bitten apple logo plans to begin a smooth transition to OLED screens, using a hybrid technology of rigid and flexible OLED panels.
OLED hybrid technology is still far from perfect, but they are a very interesting alternative since they allow the creation of much thinner and much cheaper panels than flexible panels.
Apple could adopt hybrid OLED technology on its iPad screen in 2024
Original information from the Korean blog The Elec indicates that Apple wants to invest in hybrid OLED screens for its future generations of iPads. This does not necessarily imply that the 2023 iPad models will hit the market with this technology, but it would be much more likely to happen around the year 2024.
Apparently from Apple they don’t want to rely solely on the flexible OLED technology they use in their latest iPhone models since the panels, according to the leak, they tend to “crease” and this effect would be much more noticeable on a larger screen like that of an iPad. They therefore prefer to opt for hybrid OLED technology.
“When it became known that Apple was planning to implement hybrid OLED panels in its first iPads, the whole industry assumed that the cause was a reduction in its cost. Anyway, it is understood that there is a reason why Apple prefers hybrid OLEDs. Apple hated the fact that part of the product’s screen could appear wrinkled to the user’s eyes when using flexible OLED panels.”
iPhone OLED screens are 5-7 inches, so with them this effect of “wrinkles” is not really appreciated. But on a large 10-12 inch iPad screen, it would be much more noticeable.
Currently, the latest generation models of Apple iPad Pro feature a Liquid Retina XDR display with IPS technology, which is a type of LCD display, and mini-LED technology. The implementation of hybrid OLED panels would be a huge leap in quality for the iPad screen and, in addition, it would also benefit the battery life.
This news would be in line with a very recent rumor that ensured that OLED panels would be available in iPad and Mac products from the year 2024. Let’s hope so and very soon we will be able to take advantage of it.
