Callisto Protocol impressions at Gamescom

Callisto, Gamescom, impressions, Protocol

The Callisto Protocol It is one of the most anticipated titles of this year and one of the protagonists of the last Gamescom. During Opening Night Live we could see a new trailer with a gameplay full of novelties. Striking Distance Studios’ new work didn’t disappoint with lots of action, scary enemies, blood and gore everywhere.

We had the opportunity to see a extended gameplay of approximately 15 minutes of the Callisto protocol behind closed doors during Gamescom. It was basically the complete cut of the edit shown on the show starring good old Geoff Kighley. Where we could see in action the new “mutant” enemiesscenario design, gameplay and progression mechanics, among other things.

All the action took place inside the Space Prison facilities on Jupiter’s moon. Where Jacob Leeprotagonist of the Callisto protocol, advanced through the dark corridors and dark engine rooms dispatching this “infected mutant” fate in a thousand different ways. One of the main differences with Dead Space, a saga with which it is impossible not to fall in comparison, is that action and combat will be present in a much more abundant way. But don’t worry, the oppressive atmosphere that his scenes breathe will always make us tense.

The combat system, as you could see in the trailer, is full of melee blows, point-blank shots, dodging and executions of all kinds depending on the weapon equipped or the dangers that the script itself may conceal. The variety of enemies and the design of each part of the scene will make it quite varied, and that we only got to see a very small part of its content.

watch out for mutants

Sneaking up to perform a silent assassination will be key to starting a match with an advantage, as the fight can be complicated against several enemies at the same time. Especially with the “mutants” which are greatly reinforced if they are not killed quickly. We can distinguish this type of enemy by the tentacles that emerge from different parts of its body. Later, we also saw crawling enemies able to camouflage themselves almost completely, only showing themselves when they were going to attack us.

Although for this we can defend ourselves with a large repertoire of weapons and abilities, which can be improved throughout the adventure. For example, we will be able to attract and move away larger enemies and objects as we improve this particular skill. As for the dozen weapons that we will have in the game, of which we have seen three: the pistol and the melee weapon presented in the trailer and also a semi-automatic rifle. All of them could be modified in the 3D printers that we will find on stage.

We couldn’t be happier with what we saw in The Callisto Protocol. The scenarios, combat mechanics and variety of enemies promise to generate a great immersion in survival while enjoying dynamic action gameplay. With the final icing on our protagonist’s burial chamber, worthy of Mortal Kombat’s Fatality. It remains only to wait a few months until the next December 2, 2022when it will happen Xbox series X|S, Xbox OnePS4, PS5 and PC.
