Gaming News The Last of Us, Bioshock… 7 action video games without final boss
The world of video games has had a plethora of outstanding bosses, good or bad (Elden Ring, Hollow Knight, Resident Evil…). But some have been particularly conspicuous by their absence. Here are seven action video games that surprisingly don’t have a real final boss.
Bioshock 2
Bioshock impressed with its particularly memorable ending. If the boss didn’t have as much taste as the latter after the last reveal, there was still a good way to end the game in style. Strange, Bioshock 2 didn’t follow this pattern, and that’s despite some well-crafted bosses throughout the game. The final fight is indeed to survive Lamb’s final attack, which will send a whole bunch of splicers at you. They don’t have the pleasure of killing the abominable Sofia Lamb, instead finding themselves a mere spectator of her death. An extremely frustrating situation that is repeated in Bioshock Infinite. The final battle is in fact to shoot down an airship and not to defeat a powerful enemy face to face.
Fallout 3
If the Fallout series had gotten us used to dynamic boss fights against emblematic villains (The Master and Frank Horrigan in particular), then this is its third work fallout 3, left a bitter taste in the mouth of some people. The final mission doesn’t feature any big villains to defeat. You’ll be able to take on a few enemies for sure, but there’s no final boss in sight. Worse, the game doesn’t end once victory is achieved. In order to get the credits, you actually have to make a difficult and irreversible decision (well, until the arrival of the Broken Steel DLC).
Halo: Combat Evolved
The Halo franchise features a plethora of readily killable enemies. What could be better than a license like this to offer the most epic final bosses possible? Well, that’s not Bungie’s choice for the first part of its flagship franchise: Halo: Combat Evolved. The studio even went beyond the simple lack of a final boss. After killing hundreds of enemies, the game actually ends on… an escape scene. You even find yourself ignoring the enemies around you so you can save yourself and leave the planet you are on. Fun ending for an action game.
If there’s one game ending that raises questions, it’s Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. Episode 46, specifically called “Truth,” left more than one player stumped. This is mainly because it challenges most of the things players thought they knew, but not only… For a franchise that has accustomed us to breathtaking duels, This Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain does not offer a final boss in the actual sense.
mirror edge
If the majority of mirror edge consists in doing parkour on colored walls and roofs, the game by Dice and Electronic Arts still offers us some scenes of action and in particular bosses to defeat. Ropeburn and Celeste paid the price, although calling them bosses is controversial. But the great antagonist of Mirror’s Edge, Jacknife, definitely cannot be called “final boss”.. When chasing him at the end of the game, one kick is enough to see him fall out of a helicopter. As the death of a great evil we have seen more conspicuously, it is true.
The Last of Us Part II
Unlike its predecessor The Last of Us Part II chose to offer multiple 1v1 battles similar to boss fights. Certainly we could see some sort of boss in the Colossus and David, but those stages took on a whole new meaning with duels like those against powerful infected or Abby (which is why we chose it here). But surprisingly, players weren’t entitled to a real final battle between Abby and Ellie. When the two protagonists clash at the end of the game, it’s in a very different way and the ending isn’t really what some might have hoped for. The final boss fight they expected didn’t quite materialize.
Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus
If Wolfenstein: The New Order made us sweat with General Deathshead (Wilhelm Strasse), Wolfenstein II: The New Colossus didn’t bother with a final boss. Not a long phase of duel against the terrible woman Iren Engel, who will certainly perish at your hands, but not after a fight in good and proper form. Let’s admit it’s still satisfying to see her with a little ax in her head. But to wrap up this long epic, we could have expected a more striking ending and a more grueling fight than we’ve come to expect from the franchise.
