House of the Dragon has already released three episodes. The latest episode named The second of his name again makes a considerable leap in time and continues the events of the Targaryen family three years later.

We took a close look at the episode and found five details that you may not have recognized at first glance, or the backgrounds of which were previously unknown to you. Incidentally, we have already done the same procedure with episodes 1 and 2:

#1: The Song at the Weirwood Tree

On the second name day of Viserys’ son Aegon, Rhaenyra is in no mood to celebrate. Instead of celebrating her brother’s birthday, she prefers to be in the godswood, reading books and having a bard sing about her.

Unfortunately, we only hear a short excerpt of the song. The text is about a woman who fled with her ships and her people. It can only be about the legendary Nymeria act. Centuries before House of the Dragon, she fled with the Rhoynar people from the Valyrians.

Her story is very detailed, which is why we focus on the essentials here. The Rhoynar were a people of Essos who worshiped the mighty river Rhyone. They were one of the greatest civilizations alongside the Valyrians, against whom they waged a bitter war.

However, thanks to the numerous dragons, Valyria was victorious, followed by Nymeria and the rest of her people fled on allegedly 1,000 ships. She traveled the world in search of a new home, finally ending up in Dorne. She torched all her ships to signal that they had found a new home.

She also married the head of the then rather small House Martell and helped him rule Dorne. Because of Nymeria, the Dornishmen were ruled by prince and princess and never by king and queen. She also coined the coat of arms: The Martells have always had a golden spear as their mark, but this has since been combined with Nymeria’s red sun.

Not only Rhaenyra seems to be enthusiastic about the legendary woman: too Arya Stark from Game of Thrones was inspired by Nymeria. So she named her direwolf after the Rhoynian princess.

A series based on the adventures of Nymeria is also in the pipeline. You can read about the upcoming Game of Thrones spin-offs here:

#2: The King’s Forest: A place steeped in history

We spend a large part of the third episode in the king’s forest. This is certainly known to fans of Game of Thrones, after all, there was in Season 1 King Robert Baratheon mortally wounded by a wild boar. Also in House of the Dragon we witness an attack of a pig.

By the way, in the books Robert didn’t just hunt any animal: he was actually on the hunt for a white deer. Just like the one Rhaenyra sees in House of the Dragon.

Incidentally, it was in the Kingswood that Jaime Lannister also killed his first man – an outlaw of the Kingswood Brotherhood. Jaime talks a bit about the fight in Game of Thrones, you can find the conversation here:

#3: Haus Kraft: Who are they actually?

The Kraft family seems to be growing in importance in House of the Dragon. In episode 3 we got to know some of the Krafts. Reason enough to say a few words about her.

Head of the house is Lyonel Kraft (Gavin Spokes), who holds the position of Master of Law. His seat is the ruins of Harrenhal, which is ruled in Game of Thrones by Petyr Baelish, among others.

Lyonel has two sons. His eldest child and heir is Harwin (Ryan Corr). He is considered the strongest man in Westeros. You see him in the third episode on the one hand while killing the deer, as well as briefly when Rhaenyra returns.

Harwin’s brother is Lary’s power (Matthew Needham). He is easily recognizable by his clubfoot, which he has had since birth. Larys is also seen in the third episode joining the women during the hunt.

#4: Jaehaery’s Daughters: The Problems of the Former King

In the conversation between Lyonel Kraft and King Viserys it is mentioned that Viserys is not the first king of the kingdom who has a difficult relationship with his daughter: his predecessor Jaehaerys did not get along too well with some of his daughters.

Among other things, there was Princess Viserrawho was supposed to marry Lord Manderly of Whitewater Port, but instead galloped drunk through the streets of King’s Landing, fell off her horse, and died.

Princess Sara was to become a septa like her sister Maegelle, but fled to Essos to become the proprietor of a brothel.

The young Princess Gael committed suicide after a traveling singer seduced, got pregnant and then left her.

Incidentally, House of the Dragon is getting a new showrunner for the second season – and in return loses the one responsible for Game of Thrones episodes like Battle of the Bastards:

#5: The Dreams of the Targaryens

The fact that some members of the Targaryens have predictive dreams was also discussed in House of the Dragon. Daenys Targaryen is said to have seen the fall of Valyria, Aegon the arrival of the white walkers and Viserys the birth of his son.

Viserys claims in episode 3 that very few possessed this ability. Over time, however, some Targaryens have been afflicted by these dreams, and almost all have perished from them.

Aerion Targaryen, for example, died almost a hundred years before Game of Thrones because he drank wildfire and thought it would turn him into a dragon. His brother Daeron saw the death of a dragon in his dreams. However, it was not a real dragon, but the death of his uncle Baelon Targaryen.

There were many more dreamers in the Targaryen family tree and more that became the breeding ground for numerous fan theories. But they all had one thing in common: the dreams came true, but not in the way the Targaryens expected. Also, the dreams did more harm than good. Game of Thrones’ Maester Aemon said in the books that the dreams killed every single one of his brothers.

Incidentally, the fact that Viserys speaks of the prophecies while standing in front of a great fire is also exciting. After all, like Melisandre from Game of Thrones, the red priests see the future in flames.
