The Silmaril play an important role in Tolkien’s Legendarium and are as important to the First Age of Middle-earth as the 20 Rings of Power were to the Second Age.
While the Rings were not forged by Sauron until the Second Age of Middle-earth, the First Age was ruled by a far more evil villain: Morgoth. And for the fight against Morgoth and the bloodshed, the Silmaril are not entirely innocent. But let’s clear up the basics first!
The Lord of the Rings: What are the Silmaril?
The three Silmaril, after which JRR Tolkien’s “The Silmarillion” was named, are jewels that enclose the light of the two trees of Valinor. In the Tolkien Legendarium, the two trees Telperion and Laurelin served as sources of light before the sun and moon were created.
They were created by the elf Feanor and were considered his masterpiece. But the gems have a corrupting effect similar to that of the magic rings of the Second Age, and Feanor made his sons swear an oath to defend the gems at all costs and, when in doubt, to recover them.
The Lord of the Rings: The Silmaril cause bloodshed
However, Melkor is able to steal the Silmaril and bring it to Middle-earth from Valinor. Bound by Feanor’s oath to reclaim the stones, numerous Noldor Elves have also traveled to Middle-earth, slaying their own people in the process to recover the Rings.
The kin killings brought about by the Oath of Feanor are considered some of the most gruesome events in the history of Middle-earth.
