The purchase of Activision Blizzard made by Microsoft continues to cause conflict between this company and Sony. After a message posted by Phil SpencerSony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan called his proposal on the future of Call of Duty on PlayStation as “inadequate”.
Since the announcement of the purchase of Activision Blizzard, Sony has expressed its unease with the situation. His main concern is Call of Duty, a franchise that has been on its consoles for decades, a situation that may be threatened by Microsoft. According to the Japanese company, eventually the games could become Xbox exclusive
For this reason, Sony has insisted on qualifying and denouncing this possibility as a “monopoly” in different parts of the world such as Brazil
Sony’s review
It is known that the current contract between Activision Blizzard and Sony will last another three years (equivalent to three installments). This includes Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, the next release. In a communication made to gamesindustry.bizJim Ryan criticized Microsoft’s considerations with its players:
“I did not intend to comment on what I understood to be a private business discussion, but I feel the need to set the record straight because Phil Spencer brought the subject up in front of the public. Microsoft has only offered that Call of Duty
remain on PlayStation for three years after the current deal between Activision and Sony ends. After almost 20 years of Call of Duty in PS, your proposal was inadequate on many levels and did not take into account the impact on our players. We want to ensure that PS players continue to have the experience of Call of Duty of the highest quality, and Microsoft’s proposal undermines this principle.”
What can be interpreted from this message is that Sony will continue to complain about the situation until there is an agreement that guarantees the stay of the aforementioned franchise on PlayStation for a long time. There has been no response from Microsoft for now.
