Finally the time has come: Assassin’s Creed goes to Japan. After a series of previous reports and leaks, Ubisoft finally made the news official during Saturday’s Gaming Showcase 2022.
It was just a quick teaser, but we got a quick animated look at a ninja prowling the shadows of feudal Japan. Ubisoft, currently called Project Red, confirmed the game will be the next big entry in the series’ latest open-world RPG installment. Development will be led by Ubisoft Quebec, the studio that previously helmed it Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. It will also be directed by Jonathan Dumont, one of the many high-profile figures at Ubisoft accused of bullying and other toxic behavior during a workplace settlement at the company in 2020. The company has previously claimed that anyone accused of misconduct has been thoroughly investigated and sanctioned where appropriate.
Fans were hoping for one Assassin’s Creed Game based in Japan for years and it seems that the French publisher has finally caved in. Exactly how the series’ evolving open-world RPG formula will play out there remains to be seen, but for now it seems that way Sucker Punch’s critically acclaimed secret sandbox Spirit of Tsushima will officially have some competition.
The rumors surrounding the game codenamed Project RedShe started twirling earlier this summer. Bloomberg reported later that the game would be a part of it Assassin’s Creed Infinitya new platform designed to integrate multiple time periods and worlds to help players move between them more seamlessly.

Ubisoft appears to be banking heavily on the continued success of its biggest franchise. The department 2 and Watchdogs Legion hasn’t taken any of these series to new heights, and the French publisher has yet to find a multiplayer live service game that can replicate the success of Rainbow Six Siege. In the meantime, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey and recently Valhalla, were both excellent and have been sales juggernauts for the company for many years. Hopefully doubling this formula won’t run into the ground.
In early September, Ubisoft announced this Chinese conglomerate Tencent acquires an economic stake of 49.9 percent into the investment vehicle that has allowed Ubisoft executives to retain control of the company. Everyone, it seems, bets heavily on Assassin’s Creed.
