With Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED took a real shot in the foot and is still working on repairing its tarnished reputation. But it should still continue with Cyberpunk.
With the technically immature release of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt RED really didn’t do themselves any favors. All the laurels that the studio had laboriously earned with the Witcher series dried up in a very short time. After several patches, a single expansion is to follow in the coming year, which will only be released for PC and new-gen consoles.
But that doesn’t mean the end of the brand. As Michał Nowakowski, Vice President for Business Development at CD Projekt, has now confirmed, they want to devote themselves to the brand with full vigour, even after the final expansion.
“We’ve put a lot of time and effort into building this franchise, and we definitely want to continue building on what’s been built now – with new stories, new experiences, new content, basically. Not just the video game format… In terms of expansions, there will only be one major expansion, but there will be new things in the future,” the statement said.
The future will show exactly what this means and probably also the success of the Netflix anime series Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which started today. Only for the game Cyberpunk 2077 itself is apparently finally over after the 2023 expansion Phantom Liberty.
