The September 13 State of Play had some announcements in store. PC gamers can also look forward to many of them, but it is precisely the promising one Rise of the Ronin will be released console-exclusively for the Playstation. However, there is a high probability that Sony will also bring the title to the PC – otherwise it would have been announced as “exclusive” instead of “console exclusive”.

Update from September 14, 2:00 p.m.: When we asked Sony, we were told that there is currently no further information about a possible PC release.

You can find out what other announcements and trailers there were at Sony’s event and what’s included for PC players in our large overview:

You’ve never seen Japan like this before

Rise of the Ronin shows you Japan at the end of the Edo period in the 19th century. The developers also want to tell about the darkest sides of this era, before those up to now many recoiled. But first we want to show you the trailer:

But what exactly is Rise of the Ronin for a game? In the PlayStation Announcement and the first trailer already contains the most important information:

Known developers

Rise of the Ronin is being developed by Team Ninja, who most recently published the Final Fantasy prequel Stranger of Paradise and the action role-playing game Nioh 2. So we can count on probably challenging fights, in which we will not only use katana and other classic weapons, but also resort to firearms. The game will also be Team Ninja’s most ambitious project to date.

Katana

There will not only be classic sword fights in Rise of the Ronin.

Pistol

We can also use more modern firearms.

world and history

In addition to the action fights, with which the developers have already gained a lot of experience, the story should also be in the foreground. Rise of the Ronin relies on a historical inspired Setting that probably does without fantasy elements for the most part.

It goes to 19th-century Japan, which after centuries of isolation is about to undergo a major upheaval. The end of the Edo period is heralded by the arrival of the black ships shown in the trailer, an American fleet that forced the opening of Japanese ports to the west.

There should be a complex story and characters with their own motivation. This American officer also plays an important role.

At this time, we slip into the role of a ronin, a samurai who serves no master. We explore the open world and freely choose which side we want to be on in different conflicts. For example, there is talk of a civil war between the ruling Tokugawa shogunate and their opponents. On a similar scenario for the newly announced Assassin’s Creed: Codename Red our author Tillmann already speculated in his column:

A samurai setting is the best thing that can happen to Assassin's Creed!

Rise of the Ronin doesn’t have a fixed release date yet, but it’s scheduled for release in 2024 for the Playstation 5. It is currently unknown whether it will also be released on PC at the same time.

What do you think of Rise of the Ronin? Would you like to try a Team Ninja game that takes a stab at this dark setting and hope for a future PC release? Or are you already looking forward to the new Assassin’s Creed in Japan and don’t need another open world with a similar scenario? Write your opinion in the comments!
