How to Enable Haptic Feedback on iPhone Keyboard (iOS 16)

Ever since the introduction of the Taptic Engine in the iPhone 7, Apple has made a clear commitment to delivering excellent haptic feedback. It’s surprising that it’s taken this long to include haptic feedback on the iPhone’s keyboard.

With iOS 16, Apple is finally catching up with Android and many external iPhone keyboards, as it now offers its own haptic feedback when typing.

Although disabled by default, the haptic keyboard uses the Taptic Engine to produce a small vibration when a key is pressed. It’s different from keyboard sounds (which many users turn off immediately), and unlike keyboard sounds, it continues to work even when the iPhone is silent.

This feature has been available on some external iPhone keyboards for a long time and also on many Android phones for years. Still, it feels “new”.

If you’ve been using an iPhone for years, you probably don’t use an external keyboard, and you probably haven’t used this feature on Android either. So, for many users, this feature will be a novelty and one of those things you didn’t know you needed.

How to Enable Haptic Keyboard Feedback in iOS 16

1. Open Settings

As usual, you will need to open Settings on your compatible iPhone.

2. Tap “Sounds and vibrations”

3. Select “Haptic feedback”

In the ‘Haptic Feedback’ section you can enable or disable sounds and vibrations.

4. Activate the “Vibrations” switch

You will see that there are two switches: one for sounds and one for vibrations (or haptics). They operate independently of each other.

Keyboard sounds depend on the mute button on the iPhone, unlike vibrations: they are always on as long as the switch is activated in the settings.
