There are a few reasons to skip the iPhone 14 and wait until 2023.
With the new iPhone 14 Pro, Apple has caused quite a stir, but has also shown once again that they can use creative elements to stand out from the crowd. However, most of the features can only be assigned to the two Pro models.

Waiting for the next iPhone might pay off
That waiting can pay off is meant literally. This year, the new design of the notch takes place exclusively on the Pro models. We might be stretching ourselves a bit here, but we think Dynamic Island will catch on for the cheaper iPhones as well. Similar to what happened with the iPhone X – but more on that later.
Apart from that, Apple will have to rely on USB-C in the future and send its Lightning connector to the eternal hunting grounds. Because the EU will prescribe a uniform standard from 2024, also for the manufacturer from California.
What changes can you look forward to with the iPhone next year? In summary, the following changes are in the room, for which your patience can be worthwhile:
- New A17 chip with 3 nanometer manufacturing
- USB-C port
- Dynamic Island for iPhone 15 (and iPhone 15 Pro)
- 120 Hertz Display
- Periscope-Camera
Do not worry! Of course, we don’t want to just leave these functions in the room. We examine each in more detail below.
New A17 processor makes a bigger leap
The increase in performance of the iPhone 14 Pro is marginal compared to its predecessor. The A16 processor is based on 4-nanometer manufacturing. As can be seen in the roadmap of the supplier TSMC, chips with a production of 3 nanometers will not be possible until next year.
Apart from smaller chips, this production has other advantages: In addition to a drastically reduced power consumption and, at the same time, a longer battery life, a significant increase in performance can also be expected.
Significantly higher values for output, performance and energy efficiency can therefore be expected next year.
An iPhone 15 finally with USB-C?
Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects some models to be equipped with the current standard USB-C port next year. The advantage of USB-C is not only due to its widespread use.

Compared to the Lightning connector, the switch brings higher data transfer rates and charging speeds. This would be particularly important for ProRes files. Mark Gurman from Bloomberg confirms Kuo’s thesis and claims that the manufacturer is already in the testing phase.
The amount of cables might be reduced next year.
But there was also initial speculation that Apple would keep the Lightning connectoruntil the iPhone is fully on MagSafe. Future iPhones would only be charged via QI charging stations. So far, however, this technology has lacked one thing in particular: the possibility of data transmission.

Dynamic Island for all iPhones
The indentation of the new notch is not a static indentation at the top of the display.
Apple’s strategy is often to phase in design changes, primarily prioritizing their Pro models. This is not only very noticeable on the iPhone. The MacBook Pro and iPad Pro series have also received changes in design and equipment before all other series.
It was foreseeable that the notch would sooner or later disappear from the iPhone. In the iPhone 14 Pro with Dynamic Island, it is already being partially replaced. This is not a static display cut-out, as assumed in advance. Instead, Apple uses its software to dynamically change size and shape depending on the notification or event.

Display expert Ross Young is certain that this fundamental change to the iPhone will be rolled out to the standard models next year to ensure a consistent and future-oriented design language for the iPhones.
The fingerprint sensor under the display
Especially in the early days of Corona, Android users were better off with the fingerprint sensor – or at least had it more comfortable. Unlocking the iPhone via Face ID while wearing a mask was (and in some cases still is) a real test of patience.
Gradually, Apple introduced other ways to unlock the cell phone more easily with biometric authentication, such as when wearing an Apple Watch. As an additional alternative, Apple integrated facial recognition when wearing a mask – after all, not everyone has an Apple Watch!
Nevertheless, many want the Touch ID sensor as an alternative to Face ID. According to journalist Joanna Stern from The Wall Street Journal
and Mark Gurman Apple has already tested a fingerprint sensor under the display.
Apple has never implemented a fingerprint sensor under the display before.
In 2021, Kuo predicted the integration of TouchID under the display for the iPhone in the fall of 2023. Unfortunately, so far there is no further evidence that this type of fingerprint sensor will be installed in an iPhone in the next year. In the worst case, it will be years before Apple uses this technology for their smartphones.
The new periscope camera
2023 could finally be the time for Apple to integrate the periscope camera into the iPhone. This rumor has been circulating around the web for several years. Competitor Samsung is already showing off a periscope lens in its S22 Ultra, which enables 10x optical zoom and 100x digital zoom.

Kuo is in one blog post However, believes that this feature will only be integrated in the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Nevertheless, a larger zoom range would bring an improvement to the previous telephoto camera (3x optical zoom).
Furthermore, it is quite conceivable that Apple will also integrate existing features such as a 120 Hertz display into the cheaper iPhones. The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus have to endure with a screen that is limited to 60 Hertz. As always, it remains to be seen whether and how Apple will distribute these changes to the new iPhones in the future.
