More than 90 videos of the development were found in an unprecedented leak grand theft auto 6 have appeared on the web. The leaker posted the videos on GTAForums under the username teapotuberhacker. They claimed to have accessed it directly from Rockstar Games’ internal Slack.
The videos feature robberies, shootings, open world driving and conversations with full voice acting. The footage appears to confirm a recent report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier that the game would be set in a fictional Miami – possibly the Vice City of GTA lore – and feature a playable female character. The game is clearly under development, with debugging programming elements visible on screen, but has many working features.
From the start, there was little doubt as to the authenticity of the videos – they were of a scale and detail that would be nearly impossible to fake. Then scream wrote on Twitter that Rockstar sources had confirmed to him that the “early and unfinished” footage leak was real and said the scenario was a “nightmare” for Rockstar.
At the time of writing, the videos can still be downloaded using the links in the original post on the GTA Forums, although Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive, has begun asserting copyright claims against videos on YouTube and social media to promote them to remove prospect. The videos have already been shared so widely that Take-Two’s lawyers may be fighting a losing battle if they try to take them off the internet.
In total there are approx 50 minutes of footage. Many of the clips are very short. One of the longer videos, lasting approximately three minutes, features the female player character robbing a restaurant, threatening staff and customers who will react with fear if a gun is pointed at them. She and her male accomplice then get into a shootout with the police before jumping into the police squad car and driving off. The graphical treatment is quite realistic but still in line with the GTA house style.
The words Vice City can be seen in some clips. At one point, the female character enters a strip club filled with a dense crowd. Other videos show shooting and conversation systems.
The leaker said it was “possible” that they would release the source code GTA5 and GTA6and even a test build of GTA6. In the forums they answered questions about the source code and appeared to be sharing legally sensitive information in connection with an ongoing court case regarding cheat mods for GTA Online.
Even if the leaker doesn’t go ahead and release the source code or a playable build, this is still an extremely damaging leak for Rockstar on a scale rarely, if ever, seen. Rockstar only confirmed this earlier this year GTA6 was in “active development”. The Bloomberg report claimed work on the game began in 2014, after that GTA5‘s release, but this progress was slow and GTA6 It was unlikely to be released before 2024. Changes in corporate culture at Rockstar are said to have reduced overtime for developers and changed the tone of the game itself, with humor that’s less likely to resonate with marginalized groups.
To update: The hacker claiming responsibility for the leak has responded on the GTA Forums thread, asking anyone working for Rockstar Games or parent company Take-Two Interactive to get in touch. “I’m trying to negotiate a deal,” they said.
