Sins of a Solar Empire is considered a successful 4X space strategy game and therefore received several expansions. So far we have waited in vain for a successor – but now the time has finally come.
Developer Ironclad Games has now announced Sins of a Solar Empire 2, the long-awaited successor to the award-winning 4X space strategy game from 2008. Stardock Corporation will act as publisher. The release is planned “soon” for the PC via Epic Games Store; there is no mention of a console version.
Released over 14 years ago, the space strategy game put you in control of one of three factions; the Rebellion expansion later increased the number to six. Each fights across the galaxy in an endless war to survive and expand their sphere of influence. You command fleets of spaceships, colonize worlds, build new ships and space stations and fight space battles.
This predecessor was also a surprise success because it sold more than 200,000 copies in the first month after its release – even though the budget at the time was less than one million dollars. In the case of the sequel Sins of a Solar Empire 2, which by the way has so far only been announced via a short teaser (see below), this will probably be significantly higher.
All of the factions from the original Sins of a Solar Empire are set to make a comeback. One of the most significant new features is the introduction of planetary orbits, which means that you can no longer align your steps on the map with static goals, but must take into account the movements in the orbit. Otherwise, of course, there are noticeably improved graphics, an optimized physics engine and larger-scale battles with up to ten players. A more concrete release date was initially still owed.
