Marvel is clearly gearing up to dive into the gaming world, but you shouldn’t expect any connection between them.
Last month, we made two big Marvel video game announcements, one of which was Uncharted territory Director Amy Hennig’s next title involves Captain America and an early incarnation of Black Panther from World War II.The most recent announcement is that the Iron Man game comes from EA have Motivation Studio. But don’t be shy about these characters meeting in the Marvel Cinematic Universe because Marvel doesn’t have any plans.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz, Marvel executive Bill Rosemann made it clear that when it comes to games, everything will be a separate entity (thanks, Eurogamer). “Surprisingly, the world is so familiar and accepting of the multiverse,” Rothman said. “We have all these different realities. Now they’re all real, and we want to give everyone the freedom to tell their stories.
“We don’t want to say ‘You can’t blow up the moon because this game from another studio needs the moon.’ We want to give everyone free and unobstructed access to tell their stories.”
Interconnected narratives are obviously a big obstacle to storytelling in the MCU, as various projects have to constantly have some sort of narrative rhythm, which means most of what we watch isn’t particularly self-contained.
But connected or not, Marvel games have a lot to look forward to. Firaxis’ Marvel Midnight Sun is coming soon, insomnia Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine are in the works, and then there’s Niantic’s world of Marvel heroes.
Although it should be noted that despite the lack of any connection overall, according to a PlayStation blog post at the time of the game’s launch, Spider-Man and Wolverine actually appear to share a universe.
