There was a rumor for a while that a certain affinity researching one Halo Infinite Battle Royale, the studio recently promised that the project it’s working on is “a big, new thing for the franchise.”
Back in August 2020, the Halo Infinite store page mentioned a battle royale mode, and later that year, it was rumored that the game would actually receive it sometime in 2021. This obviously never happens, but it happens quite often that Halo support studio Certain Affinity is working on something related to Halo Infinite, and there’s been a lot of rumors that this is where the battle royale mode is in development. Now, Certain Affinity exec Paul Sams has teased the project a bit (thanks Eurogamer).
“The most important thing we’re doing right now is being public, and we’ve been working on Halo Infinite for over two years to do something — they’re very prescriptive about what we can say,” Sams told VentureBeat. “But we’re doing something unannounced, and we’re leading the development of this unannounced thing in terms of concept and design.
“This is a big and new thing for the franchise. But I can’t say more. It’s the biggest of our three projects right now. We have almost 100 developers working on it .”
Obviously, we still don’t know what “Specific Affinity” is actually doing, since that’s what the Battle Royale rumours are so far. While 100 developers is a sizable team, it’s a safe bet that whatever the project is, it’s going to be sizable.
The launch of Halo Infinite was a bit of a pain, and the road since then has been uneven, with 343 Industry acknowledging some of its missteps along the way. Maybe a battle royale mode will help solve the problem.
