Google to shut down its Stadia streaming service in January

The reason the company offered was that while it built Stadia on a strong technical foundation, it didn’t gain “user traction” as expected; as a result, Google would start shutting down the streaming service.

Stadia players will receive a refund for all hardware purchased through the Google Store. This includes the Stadia Controller, Stadia Founder’s Edition, Stadia Premiere Edition, or the Play and Watch with Google TV Package.

Refunds also apply to all games and add-ons purchased through the Stadia Store.

Google expects to complete most of the refunds by mid-January. That said, Stadia Pro subscription payments will not be eligible for a refund, but active subscribers will continue to have free access to their library during the shutdown.

All players will continue to have access to their game library and will be able to play until January 18, 2023. This way they can complete their final game session and transfer any progress made to other platforms if possible.

To that end, as of today, the ability to purchase games, new subscriptions, add-ons or in-game purchases on Stadia has been disabled.
