Today's Animal Crossing Direct has brought a ton of data for future information Crossing the Animals: New Horizons Change. You can check out the entire list of new additions, but what has kept us in our seat is the new ability to customize your island.
You are right, once you have the permission to build an Island Designer you will be able to not only build the paths, but also renovate the landscape itself. These include creating existing rivers, creating lakes, lakes and waterfalls, and breaking down roads. Whatever the desired shape, you can now literally create your own Animal Crossing Village as you see fit.
It may seem trivial if you've never played a series before, but this is a big change for volunteers who have always dreamed of more control over their town.
