House of the Dragon: Here’s what you need to know about the insidious demon Targaryen!

Daemon Targaryen is one of the most important warriors on the side of Heir-Empress Rhaenyra Targaryen in “House of the Dragon”. He fights numerous battles on her behalf. Here’s what you need to know about the cunning knight.

The HBO series House of the Dragon is a spin-off of George RR Martin’s Game of Thrones. The show tells the story of House Targaryen, who ruled the Seven Kingdoms of Westeros for over 300 years. Among other things, the focus is on the ruthless prince Daemon Targaryen. We tell you what else awaits him in the course of the series. Warning, spoilers!

Daemon Targaryen is the second son of Prince Baelon Targaryen and his sister-wife Alyssa Targaryen. His brother Viserys I was crowned King of the Seven Kingdoms after the death of his father. As the eldest male prince, Daemon sees himself as his brother’s rightful heir to the throne.

However, Viserys I appoints his firstborn daughter, Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen, as his rightful heir to the throne. However, Daemon was not completely uninvolved in this decision. When his sister-in-law Aemma Arryn and nephew Baelor die giving birth, Daemon makes a joke at their expense. He refers to the deceased boy as “heir for a day”, drawing his brother’s ire.

The prince of the city

As the commander of King’s Landing City Guard, Daemon is feared. With his sword “Dark Sister” he is considered a great warrior and gifted fighter. In his position, he deals ruthlessly with lawbreakers. He cuts off the arm of pickpockets and castrates rapists.

From the city guard, which was still unorganized at the time, he turns into a unit that follows him and, thanks to him, becomes a serious authority in Königsmund. He equips the knights with uniform weapons and armor and he gives them golden cloaks, giving them the name “golden cloaks”.

When Daemon draws his brother’s wrath again, he is dismissed from his post. Many of his Knights of the City Guard follow him and subsequently fight with Daemon in the Battle of the Stepping Stones. The Targaryen Prince can win this together with Corlys Velaryon and slay the crab feeder. After the war, Daemon crowns himself King of the Stepping Stones.

Demon and the women

At the age of 16, Daemon is married to Rhea Rois. She is the Lady of Runecity and Heir of the Vale. But the young Targaryen prince is little impressed by this connection. He is bored and berates his wife as a “bronze bitch”. When rumors spread that he was having an affair with his niece Rhaenyra, he proposed to his brother that he marry her.

However, Viserys I refuses this connection since Daemon is already married. To follow his plans and get rid of his hated wife. Tricks Daemon into the accidental death of his wife. He kills Rhea and claims the Vale for himself.

When he returns to King’s Landing, Rhaenyra is already married to her cousin, Laenor Velaryon. At the wedding he meets the young daughter of Corlys Velaryon and sister Laenors. Against his brother’s will, he marries her and flees with her to the Free Cities.

Along with Laena, he has twin daughters, Rhaena and Baela. Complications arise with the birth of her third child, and when the maesters give neither her nor the child a chance, Laena decides to commit suicide. She drags herself to the Pentos booth and lets her dragon Vhagar burn her.

Years later, he meets Rhaenyra again at his wife’s funeral. Even though his niece is still married, they soon start an affair. Together they hatch a plan to fight as a married couple against the Greens who are challenging Rhaenyra’s claim to the throne.

Daemon, Rhaenyra, Laenor and his lover Qarl Gorge fake Laenor’s death, allowing the two men to go into hiding. So Rhaenyra is free to marry Daemon. Together with his wife he fathers two sons: Aegon III. and Viserys II Targaryen.

Dance of the Dragons

When Rhaenyra was heavily pregnant with her third child, her father died. The Greens, who want to prevent Rhaenyra’s accession to the throne, cover this up at first and convene the Small Council. In this, Otto and Alicent Hightower make arguments against Rhaenyra’s legacy, claiming that Daemon would take over and cruelly judge the people.

So they crown Aegon II Targaryen, Viserys I’s eldest son, as the new king. When Rhaenyra finds out about this, she suffers a stillbirth. Rhaenyra then convenes the Black Council, in which Daemon holds a high post. Daemon then crowns his wife as the rightful Queen of Westeros. The dance of the dragons ensues.

Daemon flies to Harrenhal to convince the Houses that have not yet bowed to Aegon II. There he takes the fortress for himself. At first the Lords are hesitant, but they soon join the blacks.

Meanwhile, Lucerys, Rhaenyra’s second son, is sent as a messenger. He is murdered by his uncle Aemond Targaryen. Daemon swears revenge and sends the two crooks blood and cheese into the Red Keep. They kill Aegon II’s eldest son in front of his mother and grandmother.

Daemon’s downfall

During the Dance of the Dragons, Daemon fights numerous other battles. His stepson Jacaerys dies in the process. Through his contacts, he learns that Aemond Targaryen plans to retake Harrenhal. He then has it spread throughout the riverlands that he is waiting for his nephew in Harrenhal.

After 14 days of waiting, it will appear there. Over the sea, a fight ensues between the men on their kites. When the animals are tightly entwined, Daemon Aemond manages to thrust his sword into the eye socket. Together with their dragons, the warriors fall into the water. Daemon’s body is not found, but he may not have survived the impact.
