The Witcher 4: Start of the new trilogy will take a long time

Long, start, time, Trilogy, Witcher

After CD Projekt RED announced a whole stack of games just a few days ago, speculation has started as to when The Witcher will continue. But that will probably take a long time.

This week, CD Projekt RED banged the drum and announced a whole mountain of projects, from new Witcher games to the next cyberpunk and a whole new brand.

Of course, the announcement caused massive interest, especially because a new Witcher trilogy was promised. We already knew that a fourth Witcher game based on Unreal Engine 5 is in development – now we also know that the full trilogy should follow within six years of the release of the first game.

Unfortunately, we will probably have to wait at least until 2025 for this. CDPR is currently in the process of making preparations for the new engine and a lot of time is still needed for this. This is not necessarily surprising, because the developers now have to convert all tools and their development environments after moving away from the in-house engine.

When asked if the next Witcher was more than three years away from launch, CEO Adam Kicinski confirmed it. So we won’t see a Witcher 4 before 2025. However, the development of the following two parts should be faster, since the basis for the development will then be on Unreal Engine 5.

Still a lot of time… But let’s look at it positively: other Witcher games have been announced, for example one by The Molasses Flood and one by a third-party developer. So maybe we’ll get something to bridge the gap after all. The PS5 and Xbox Series versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are also scheduled for the fourth quarter.
