Whether you’re in the anime community or not, chances are you’ve seen fans hype the manga – dubbed it “peak fiction” – and seen your social media timeline explode with waves of Hype abounded waiting for its anime adaptation to become the pop culture touchstone of the year. After watching the first episode, I can say that the chainsaw man Anime more than lives up to the hype.

As someone experiencing it for the first time chainsaw man by reading it all in one go a Year Before that, I’m jealous of pure anime viewers who will experience it for the first time through the adaptation of anime studio Mappa. Much like Studio Trigger recently rolled in its bombastic action to not overshadow the emotional weight of its Netflix anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunner, So does Mappa when it comes to setting the stage for Denji’s tough life and how his camaraderie with Pochita makes it worth living.
While chainsaw man‘s manga is known for its fast-paced pace, the anime’s first installment doesn’t overwhelm the senses. Instead, it transports you into its cruel and momentarily beautiful world, like soaking yourself in a warm jacuzzi, knowing that a bucket of cold water will soon be thrown over you. But things are fine now, and the emotional devastation that is to come later will be a problem for you in the future. This is appropriate considering this is the same experience Denji goes through over the course of the first episode.
Denji’s life sucks. After inheriting his father’s debts, Denji sells his kidney, his right eye, and one of his own nuts to earn rent. Denji’s life is an endless assembly line of taking L; At one point he eats a guy’s cigarette in a dare just to make a few bucks. Still, Denji finds some light at the end of his endless tunnel of suffering by holding on to his dreams that one day will come true.

The first episode adapts chainsaw man‘s 55-page opening chapter, but trades its breakneck pacing for a more measured pacing that lets those story beats breathe. It not only spreads a similar atmosphere of melancholy and fear as Silent Hill 2′As the opening act, it effectively transports the viewer into its gloomy world.
Animation wise, similar to how Studio Bones transformed One’s seemingly static and minimalist manga panels Mob Psycho 100 in a sakuga Masterpiece of an anime that Mappa also breathes new life into chainsaw man‘s already hyperventilating world. While most anime don’t typically commit their budgets until episode 20, Mappa maintains the feature-length animation quality of his summer blockbuster film. Jujutsu Kaisen 0
When the violence kicks in, Mappa boosts the manga’s “11 out of 10” ultra-violence level, cranking it up to 12. The final action sequence between Denji and a horde of zombies is a beautiful gory masterpiece that Anime Studio would give ufables keep working Fate/Stay Night: Unlimited bladework a run for his money. Similarly, Mappa’s action choreography is in chainsaw man is a seamless blend of hand-drawn animation and 3D modeling that complement each other perfectly. Denji twists his chainsaw arms (and chainsaw head) with the same satisfying, meaty pop as that plasma cutter on Empty room.
Unlike anime-like shonen Dragon Ball Z or JoJo’s bizarre adventurewhere relative power levels are determined by the amount of training or strategic mastery of its characters, the pecking order for devils within chainsaw man derives from the amount of terror implied by a devil’s name. Similar to them Chainsaw man in Resident Evil 4 is leagues scarier than his The vermin Zombies, including Denji, when he merges with Pochita into the legendary Chainsaw Man and disembowels her completely zombie devil. This former human has a promising dark future ahead of him
Time will tell if chainsaw man‘s legacy will see it dethrone Mappa’s other side project, Attack on Titan: The Final Season, as one of the most important anime released in this decade. But if its first episode is something to start from, it’s definitely up for grabs.
