If you don’t take advantage of this monitor offer, it’s your own fault – or you already have a better one

advantage, dont, fault, monitor, offer

Even if this is a personal savings tip for Amazon Prime Day, I’ll start with who the purchase is for just not worth it. Because in this case it depends particularly heavily on what hardware or what kind of monitor you currently have.

For those of you who are already playing in a native resolution of WQHD or higher (2560×1440 pixels) and already enjoying triple-digit refresh rates, stop reading (as long as you don’t need an additional monitor). Everyone else has the chance to make a really good deal.

Which offer is it? I mean the LG UltraGear 27GN800-B, the at Amazon is currently available for 219 dollars as part of Prime Day. That’s ten dollars more than the last Prime Day in July, but I still think it’s a very good offer below the most common best price of around 240 to 250 dollars.

You can find even more tips for buying a monitor from Full HD to 4K and from 16:9 to 32:9 in our guide: The best gaming monitors of 2022. For Prime Day, our deal editors also have a live ticker ready for you.

Nils Raettig

Nils Raettig has been testing gaming hardware at GameStar since October 2013 and has meanwhile had everything on his desk, from cheap entry-level monitors to outrageously expensive 5,000 euro TFTs. Since he has fallen in love with the widescreen format, buying a 16:9 monitor is no longer an option for him personally. However, he still has to acknowledge that the LG monitor for gamers offers very good technology at a comparatively low price. Especially if you’re not yet playing with a three-digit refresh rate, he recommends you take a look at the Prime Day offer.

That’s what you get for your money

At the price of 219 dollars, the LG UltraGear 27GN800-B has what many now see as a sweet spot in gaming monitors in 16:9 format: the already mentioned WQHD resolution of 2560×1440 in combination with a fast IPS panel with 144 Hertz.

Compared to Full HD (1920×1080), the image in WQHD looks visibly sharper with the same monitor size. At the same time, WQHD does not place such high demands on your hardware as, for example, the 4K resolution (3840×2160).

Personally, I find the high refresh rate to be a much bigger bonus for your gaming experience, provided you have been playing at a maximum of 60 Hertz so far. The difference is already clearly noticeable on the desktop and, in my opinion, huge, especially in fast titles from the first-person perspective.

Inputs feel much more fluid and direct, especially when using the mouse, which can make a crucial difference in competitive titles. Therefore, my urgent recommendation is: If you are not yet playing with a three-digit refresh rate, you should change that as soon as possible, no matter what monitor you have!

There are downsides too

The best equipment is not (yet) to be expected given the technical properties mentioned at the price of 219 dollars, which is reflected in the ergonomics, for example: The UltraGear 27GN800-B stand shown in the following picture lacks a practical height adjustment.

In addition to AMD FreeSync to prevent image tearing and for improved image output, it also supports Nvidia’s counterpart G-Sync, but that only in the variant Nvidia G-Sync Compatible. The additional hardware module required for G-Sync for the best possible results is therefore missing. However, the image synchronization between graphics card and monitor can still take place.

However, this is not the case where FreeSync and G-Sync make the most noticeable difference in my experience, i.e. in the particularly low FPS range between 30 and 40 frames per second. Instead, the techniques only take effect from 48 FPS without the so-called Low Framerate Compensation (LFC). You can find out more about this in our test of the Samsung C24FG70.

In terms of ergonomics, the LG monitor only offers the option of adjusting the tilt.

In terms of ergonomics, the LG monitor only offers the option of adjusting the tilt.

At the same time, the support for G-Sync Compatible sets the 27GN800 apart from the few WQHD monitors with 144 Hertz that are a little cheaper. This makes it particularly interesting for gamers with a Geforce graphics card who still play in Full HD and/or with a maximum of 60 Hertz.

For me personally, the LG monitor is out of the question because I can no longer imagine playing on a 16:9 TFT (you can find out why in the article linked below). But if, unlike me, you can do without such a wide monitor, you will find the UltraGear 27GN800-B to be a really good offer in my opinion.

Why a new monitor has been my most important purchase in recent years
